Some high-profile tragedies at California Sober Living Homes have put a spotlight on how these businesses are regulated and run.
Well-known celebrities have recently lost their lives in licensed and unlicensed treatment facilities, or soon after checking out.
There are plenty of Sober Living Homes that provide the structure and safety that Substance Use Disorder (SUD) sufferers desperately need. But other recovery home operators can focus on profits and fail to protect patients from a devastating accident.
California Sober Living Home Tragedies
A 2026 tragedy put sober living homes back under a microscope.
Presley Gerber, the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford, died of an apparent overdose on September 20, 2026. He was 27 years old. The L.A. Times reports he was found dead in a luxury sober living home in Santa Monica after cardiac issues were reported. Gerber’s mom is a model and TV personality. Her son was also a model who had many documented bouts with drug addiction.
Another celebrity suffered a similar tragic fate at a sober living home in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Jackson Odell was 20 years old when he was found unresponsive in the recovery residence. He was declared dead at the scene. USA Today reported that the coroner’s report ruled Odell died from “acute heroin and cocaine toxicity.” Odell was known for his music and his role on The Goldbergs, an ABC sitcom.
These two tragedies are two of the most well-documented celebrity deaths in sober living homes. Sadly, there are likely many deaths in California Sober Living Homes each year. But tracking these fatal stays is difficult because Sober Living homes can pop up anywhere, in any neighborhood, and have little oversight for the services they provide.

Are Sober Living Homes Regulated?
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) inspects and licenses rehab facilities that offer a certain level of care. This would include detox centers that have 24/7 medical staff and perhaps professional counselors on staff.
Unfortunately, most sober living homes don’t offer this advanced care and therefore skirt the need to follow regulations and submit to inspections. When they remain below a certain number of residents, a sober living home can open in almost any residential neighborhood with little oversight.
Sober living homes are often the next step for SUD patients who complete therapy at licensed drug treatment centers. Residents move in and are supposed to only receive peer support in a monitored and supposedly drug-free environment.
The Added Risks with “Luxury” Sober Living Homes
Patients and their family members can be drawn in by the promises of sober living homes. And SUD patients from around the country flock to certain parts of Southern California to facilities sometimes referred to as Luxury Sober Living Homes.
These recovery residences are usually found in nicer neighborhoods. They might be near the beach and feature a resort-style atmosphere offering yoga and meditation. Some will offer great food and serene décor and landscaping. Some are licensed, but many are not.
The care that families are promised for these high-priced stays is sometimes delivered. Other times, facilities focused on enormous profits can let patients down.
These are just a few of the dangers that are often built into sober living homes:
- Unlicensed facilities offering services and unsafe care they aren’t licensed or qualified to provide.
- A lax attitude towards keeping patients in the facility and showing tough love for fear of losing high-paying customers.
- Alternative therapy homes might also offer untested and unapproved substances, like Ibogaine, putting patients at risk.
- A lack of monitoring of patients as promised on websites and in meetings with the staff.
- Untrained staff who may not know what to do if a patient is found experiencing an overdose.
Hayden Panettiere is another talented actor who recently lost her life to an overdose. Her body was found in a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment on August 16, 2026. A coroner’s report confirmed she died of an accidental overdose on drugs, including fentanyl. According to Page Six, family members say she was in a licensed luxury drug rehab center in Malibu for a few weeks before losing her life.
